Prof. Kai Liu Elected Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors
The National Academy of Inventors (NAI) just announced that Kai Liu, Professor and McDevitt Chair in Physics at the Georgetown University, has been elected to the 2022 class of NAI Fellows.

3D nanomagnetism: there is plenty of room at the top
In a study just published in Nano Letters, Prof. Kai Liu’s group and collaborators, led by Dr. Dhritiman Bhattacharya, have demonstrated the potential of 3D interconnected nanowire networks to be used as neuromorphic computing elements.

Physics major wins award
Sophie Taylor, a junior physics major, was the winner of the best poster award in the “Condensed Matter/Materials Science/Nano-Science/Surface” category at the recent PhysCon conference in Washington DC.

In memory of Wesley N. Mathews Jr. (1937 – 2022)
Wesley N. Mathews, Jr. was a member of the Department of Physics for over 50 years. He passed away on August 22, 2022 at the age of 85. Wes was a remarkable person. He loved many things including physics, nature, and people. But above all, he loved to tell stories about the adventures in his life. And he had many. So very many.

Experimental test of the topological stability of magnetic skyrmions
In a study just published in Nano Letters, Prof. Kai Liu’s group and collaborators, led by Dr. Gong Chen, have observed a topological evolution of skyrmions during the chirality switching from one handedness to the other.

Education grant to study learning in quantum mechanics funded to GU faculty

Physics Majors Present Research at the 2022 Physics Education Research Conference
Physics majors Cecilia Ochoa (C’24) and Max Webel (C’24) attended the 2022 Physics Education Research Conference (PERC) held in Grand Rapids, MI, July 13-14. Both Cecilia and Max are conducting research under the mentorship of Prof. Leanne Doughty.

Prof. Freericks featured in APS News article on quantum education
The Sept. 2022 issue of APS news reported on a special seminar at the annual meeting of the Division of Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics, held in Orlando, Florida this past May. Prof. Freericks was the lead speaker of the session.
