Wake Up And Smell The Fields

Tuesday, September 10, 2013 - 3:15pm - 4:30pm
Regents 109
Rodney A. Brooks
Author of “Fields of Color: The theory that escaped Einstein”

The history of the particles-vs.-fields debate will be discussed, along with the reasons that fields lost. The “triumphs” of Quantum Field Theory will then be presented, such as the easy derivation of e=mc2 that no one knows about. Another example was called “one of the greatest scientific achievements of all time” by Nobel laureate Frank Wilczek, but no one knows about it either. Then the gaps in QFT will be discussed. Finally it will be shown how QFT resolves or explains the weirdness and paradoxes of Quantum Mechanics and Relativity.

REFRESHMENTS AT 3:00 PM IN REGENTS HALL 109
