Peter Olmsted spoke about Additive Manufacturing at a recent event at the National Academy of Sciences and Engineering. “Additive Manufacturing” includes 3D printing, and has enormous potential to change the way things are made. A video is available that discusses how Additive Manufacturing and the entire event is archived on the National Academy Website [Olmsted speaks in session 1, and his talk begins around 33:30 into the video]. The workshop discussed the challenges faced in the theoretical and computational modeling of Additive Manufacturing.
We are collaborating with the NIST Group of Kalman Migler on trying to understand the science behind the Fused Deposition Modeling method of Additive Manufacturing (which appears in many desk-top 3D printers that make plastic parts). Claire McIlroy is calculating how the extrusion process influences the polymer confirmations, which ultimately controls the welding and strength of 3D-printed plastic parts.
