A natural oil slick off of the Santa Barbara coast illustrates the principle of thin film interference of light

Prof. Freericks won a prize from the Division of Computational Physics of the American Physical Society for the best image illustrating quantum mechanics. The image, of a natural oil slick off of the Santa Barbara coast illustrates the principle of thin film interference of light, which produces the natural colors. This is one of the quantum applications described by Richard Feynman’s approach to quantum mechanics which a topic discussed in Prof. Freericks’ quantum mechanics courses.
