The Department of Physics is pleased to announce the inaugural winner of the Professor Walter G. Mayer Endowed Scholarship to support a graduate student pursuing a Ph.D. in experimental physics: Alan “Pasha” Tabatabai, a third year graduate student working in the research lab of Prof. Dan Blair. Pasha received his Bachelors of Science in Physics from Gonzaga University in 2011. As a rising senior, he participated in the NSF sponsored Summer Research Experience for Undergraduates Program (REU) at Georgetown in 2010. Since coming to Georgetown for grad school, Pasha has been working in Prof. Blair’s group on a project to study the formation of gels derived from reconstituted silk proteins. This system is particularly interesting as a candidate for producing on demand tissue scaffolds and other bio-compatible materials. The Mayer scholarship fund has been endowed through the generous support of Dr. David Auth (G’69), a former graduate student of the late Professor Walter Mayer.
