The Georgetown Department of Physics participated in the 8th Annual Astronomy Festival on the National Mall on June 2nd. This public star-gazing and science outreach event, organized by Hofstra University, featured hands-on activities, exhibits, and solar, optical, and radio telescopes set up and run by volunteers from over thirty science organizations, universities, and astronomy clubs. The Georgetown booth was lively and well attended. Students and faculty demonstrated properties of electromagnetic radiation, led hands-on activities on the scale of the solar system, and used an open telescope to explain how telescopes work.
