Professor Mark Esrick received his B.S. (1969) and Ph.D.(1981) in Physics at Georgetown University and joined the physics department in 1987. His research includes derivation and applications of the image potential for charged ions above conducting and dielectric surfaces. In collaboration with the Georgetown University Medical School, he has investigated electric impedance measurements of tissue undergoing hyperthermia as a means of monitoring the treatment of malignancies in real-time, the effects of chemical gradients on axon guidance, and the modeling of the temperature distribution in lungs during transplantation. He has been a co-investigator on grants received from the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, the Sloan Foundation, and the Whitaker Foundation. He served as coordinator of the Post-Baccalaureate Pre-Medical Certificate Program. His current interests include improving the teaching of physics courses for non-science majors.
