Recent grants awarded to physics faculty

Professor Jim Freericks (PI) and Professor Leanne Doughty (co-PI), Physics, and Professor Justyna Zwolack (NIST) received $369,604 from the Air Force Office of Scientific Research for Improving undergraduate education to prepare the quantum-enabled workforce in quantum sensing.

Professor Jim Freericks, Physics, received an award of $560,000 from the Department of Energy as part of a five year long multi-institutional project to study how to use current quantum computers for new science and entitled Algorithms for Quantum Utility: Intelligent, Robust, and Efficiently Distributed (AQUIRED). Professor Freericks also  received an award of $450,000 from DOE  for a three year long project entitled “Theoretical description of nonequilibrium dynamics of electron-phonon coupled quantum materials,” which uses computational modeling to determine the response of certain types of materials to large ultrafast laser pulses.

Professor Amy Liu and Professor Ed Van Keuren, Physics, received $388,404 from NSF for the Georgetown University REU Site for Materials Physics. This grant supports a summer program for visiting undergraduate students to engage in research with Georgetown Physics faculty.

Professor Ed Van Keuren, Physics, received a $446,239 grant from the NIH for a project entitled “Investigations of drug encapsulation in polymer nanoparticles: Training undergraduate students in multidisciplinary research.”
