The research work of an REU student Joseph Lee has just been published in Physical Review A. The paper, entitled Decomposition of high-rank factorized unitary coupled-cluster operators using ancilla and multiqubit controlled low-rank counterparts. This work showed how one can trade off using extra qubits for circuit depth in applying high-rank unitary coupled cluster terms to a quantum wavefunction. This is a methodology employed to determine the energy of molecules in quantum chemistry calculations. This work was co-authored by Luogen Xu, a graduate student in the department, and Prof. Freericks. The work was supported by the Department of Energy and the National Science Foundation.
